Back To School With BAERING

As our Facebook and Instagram feeds fill up with back to school photos, our team took a trip down memory lane to share some of their throwback school photos! Can you guess which childhood photo belongs to which team member? Keep reading and see how well you know the BAERING team.

Plus, we wanted to know if what they wanted to be when they were younger relates to what they do today. Take a look at our team’s answers below:

Jeanne Harmor

What did you want to be when you grow up?
A lawyer.

What is your current role at BAERING?
Senior Account Executive

How did you choose your current career? Is it different from what you wanted to be as a kid?
I chose it because I thought I was going to Harvard and you go to Harvard to become a lawyer. I learned later that the school is for much more than that. I learned how much reading you had to do, and quickly decided that I should pick something else!

What is something you learned when you were growing up that helped you prepare for your job today?
The importance of patience and honesty.

Ashley Warren

What did you want to be when you grow up?
I wanted to be a waitress.

What is your current role at BAERING?
Senior Account Executive

How did you choose your current career? Is it different from what you wanted to be as a kid?
I went into Public Relations after serving as the VP of PR for my sorority’s chapter at Wake Forest. I’m not a waitress like I wanted to be, but luckily, I was able to fulfill that dream during college working summers in Topsail Beach.

What is something you learned when you were growing up that helped you prepare for your job today?
I learned how to think outside the box when I was growing up. Being able to see the big picture and create alternative solutions to problems helped me prepare for the strategy work that I do today. I love finding new challenges and creating unique solutions to them – it keeps me on my toes!

Michelle Fowler

What did you want to be when you grow up?
A teacher.

What is your current role at BAERING?
Executive Vice President

How did you choose your current career? Is it different from what you wanted to be as a kid?
I actually did teach part-time Pre-K during college and after two years, I realized that if I stayed on this career path, I might not ever have children of my own. So, I switched my major to Communications/Public Relations.

What is something you learned when you were growing up that helped you prepare for your job today?
Never stop learning and growing no matter where you are in your career.

Catherine Ritchie

What did you want to be when you grow up?
I wanted to host my own talk show like Kelly Ripa.

What is your current role at BAERING?
Assistant Account Executive

How did you choose your current career? Is it different from what you wanted to be as a kid?
I received the superlative for most talkative in 5th grade and my senior year of high school, so when struggling to pick a major in college someone referred me to communications. I figured if I loved talking so much and could talk to anyone, I might as well make a living out of it.

What is something you learned when you were growing up that helped you prepare for your job today?
Through many odd jobs (especially in food service), I learned the value of enthusiasm and hard work. I learned that no matter what situation you find yourself in, there is always room to grow and improve. Each time I think I am done growing, I challenge myself to find a new area to grow into. This has always helped to keep jobs exciting and helped me to network even in the most unlikely of places.

Elizabeth Kadick

What did you want to be when you grow up?
A veterinarian.

What is your current role at BAERING?
Account Director

How did you choose your current career? Is it different from what you wanted to be as a kid?
I started off in communications in government at the state and federal levels. Switching over to the private sector and helping businesses and organizations communicate seemed to be a natural progression. Definitely different from my childhood dream of healing horses and vaccinating cows!

What is something you learned when you were growing up that helped you prepare for your job today?
Flexibility is key. Flexibility in being open to careers outside of your childhood dream, flexibility in your path to your “adult career” and giving yourself the flexibility to continue to grow and evolve.

Kellyn Lee

What did you want to be when you grow up?
I wanted to be an actress.

What is your current role at BAERING?
Assistant Account Executive

How did you choose your current career? Is it different from what you wanted to be as a kid?
I chose this career because I loved the stories behind each movie I saw and each book I read. I love discovering the unique stories each of our clients has to tell and sharing it to showcase what each client has to offer.

What is something you learned when you were growing up that helped you prepare for your job today?
Everyone has a story, and everyone’s story is different. Discovering someone’s story goes a long way.

Miles Clark

What did you want to be when you grow up?
I wanted to be a teacher and a coach because that’s what my mom was.

What is your current role at BAERING?
Graphic Designer

How did you choose your current career? Is it different from what you wanted to be as a kid?
I sort of fell into it. I took a design class in high school and it was really fun. I majored in sport management and gravitated toward sport marketing. My jobs/internships in college were focused on sports marketing but I was doing a lot of design work. Once I graduated, I decided I really enjoyed design more and wanted to pursue a career doing that. I did end up becoming a coach (I coach High School softball) and sort of a teacher (I am a Taekwondo Instructor) so I still sort of ended up doing what I wanted to as a kid.

What is something you learned when you were growing up that helped you prepare for your job today?
The biggest thing I learned was to never be afraid to try something. Having an idea and having the confidence to try and see if it works and the resiliency to bounce back even if didn’t.

Always try to be nice to people.
